Food is one of my favorite subjects. If there was a sport for eating, I’d sure hope to be considered the MVP. I come from a background where food is such a huge part of my culture. Coming from a Latino background, the way we show emotion, whether it is love, respect or importance, we show it through food. We’re little creators in the kitchen. And some of us get spicy about the ingredients we put into our dishes. It is all an art form out of love.
Besides culture, food is nostalgia. It brings back so many special memories for myself. It brings back memories that on the norm I would never even think of. The moment I pick up a bag of hot Cheetos or take you to my favorite Pizza Joint or Seafood Restaurant, I can tell you so many stories. This is how serious food is to myself. Maybe that’s where my love for cooking developed and why it plays such a huge part of my day.
Being the food die heart that I am, the last couple years have been quiet the challenge finding out that I was allergic to dairy. No more Ice cream or gouda cheese! Don’t even get me started on butter. I thought I was going crazy, but the more I talked to those around me, I discovered that most of my entire family had food allergies as well! I decided I wasn’t going to be a fun sucker! PS..if you'd like to read how I found out I was allergic to dairy, read my blog on the underlying issues that came from eating dairy for myself...ear aches, clogs and the worst of my symptoms lasted 9 years!
Which is the main reason I was motivated to create Sher My Appetite. However, as I began constructing recipes, I realized there's more to my story than just being allergic to dairy. Along with being allergic to dairy, and being intolerable to gluten, there was a point in my life, in my early 20's where I struggled with body dysmorphic disorder, which led to an autoimmune disease. I was overweight for at least more than half my life and I put myself through extreme measures trying to loose weight, just so I could feel more confident in my own skin. When in reality, just changing a few habits and a couple ingredients in my daily intake has helped me stay in the best shape of my life and this is the healthiest I've ever felt, not only physically, but mentally and emotionally. Its the first time EVER, that I've had a flat stomach with out killing myself in the gym or doing one sit up! I didn't even try to get a flat stomach, it just happened with what I choose to consume, and yeah I work out three times a week, but not strenuous. I say this to you to, not to boast, but to encourage you all to do the same for yourself. Love your body for who you are and treat it right.
That is why I bring to you, Sher My Appetite, all my favorite meals altered to still have fun in the kitchen. To bring some inspiration and know that you don’t have to always eat a salad and shake to eat healthy. I hope this website influences you all to get creative in your kitchen and enjoy what you love. Eating healthy shouldn’t have to be a chore, and it shouldn’t have to be bland, stressful or harmful to yourself. Food is LOVE.
I dedicate this website to my grandparents above, my parents and siblings who were my first teachers in the kitchen and to my big appetite for giving me refined taste buds for only the tastier foods in life. XO
